10 Warm and Cozy Living Room Ideas
1. Declutter your space
It’s almost impossible to feel cozy and at peace if you’re surrounded by mess and clutter. The first step to make your living room more cozy is to declutter it.
Grab a laundry basket and walk around the room, filling it with anything that doesn’t belong in the living room.
It’s important to do this on a regular basis, and can be a part of your 10 minute chore routine. When your living room is tidy, and not cluttered with toys, shoes, and dirty dishes, you will feel so much happier spending time in there.
If there are items you want to keep in your living room, but don’t necessarily want to have to look at, try using baskets like these decorative storage bins. Or this lovely barn-door cabinet looks beautiful while hiding your mess.
2. Throw in some pillows
Nothing cozies up a room faster than adding some throw pillows. They are such an easy and inexpensive way to change up your decor.
Throw pillows can add a pop of color or a different pattern to plain furnishings. They come in so many sizes and shapes, and you can change them out as the seasons change.
If you don’t want to buy and store tons of different throw pillows, you can actually get throw pillow covers to and swap them out seasonally.
Just buy a set of pillow inserts, then pick out some cute covers!
3. Add rugs
Rugs are an important component of any cozy room. They brighten up the space, and add warmth both in appearance and functionality.
From a decorating standpoint, rugs can really tie a look together, incorporating different colors and patterns. They also anchor the space, giving our eyes an easy place to land.
Not to mention that the luxurious feeling of a good rug underfoot certainly increases the cozy factor of any room.
Amazon really has some beautiful rugs at fantastic prices. They make it so easy to narrow your search by size, price, shape and pile.
4. Embrace soft mood lighting
Never underestimate the importance of soft lighting to make a living room feel more cozy. From lamps, to Edison bulb string lights, to candles, any type of ambient light will encourage you and your guests to get cozy.
Flameless candles are the perfect way to add soft lighting to your space. They add the coziness of candlelight, without the danger of an open flame.
I have several sets of these flameless candles. They even have timers so they come on every evening at the time you determine, and go off 6 hours later without any effort from you!
Another way to make your living room more cozy is with a beautiful fireplace. If, like me, you don’t have an actual fireplace, there’s a solution!
Did you know that Amazon sells some beautiful faux fireplaces? There are all varieties of sizes, styles, and prices. From ones with full-blown mantels and shelves, to some that are part of tv stands, and others that resemble a woodfire stove.
We have the woodfire stove-looking kind, and it also produces heat. When we turn it on, it instantly adds coziness to our living room.
5. Add scent
Another easy way make your home more cozy is with scent. A familiar scent can trigger happy memories of festive times of year.
I tend to love scents that are reminiscent of baked goods, but whatever scent profile you like will work best.
In addition to the fabulous Bath and Body Works candles (Leaves, anyone?), there are two easy ways to add scent to your home.
Wax melt warmers are very easy to use. Just plug it in, and place a delicious-smelling wax cube in the tray. There’s a bulb that melts it, so no need to worry about an open flame.
Aromatherapy essential oil diffusers are another fabulous and safe way to add scent to your living room. Like this one, there are such a variety of pretty ones to choose from, so they even add a decorative touch to your space.
Whether you want to use therapeutic essential oils or delicious autumn scents like these, a few drops added to some water in your diffuser will fill your living room with coziness.

6. Throw in blankets
One of the most essential elements of a cozy living room is the addition of blankets. A soft throw just invites you to curl up on the couch to watch a movie or read a good book.
These luxurious throws add texture to your space even when you’re not using it. And the fact that they’re so functional and inviting makes them such an easy and instant way to add comfort and coziness.
7. Put some memories on display
Surrounding yourself with photos of your loved ones and happy memories is certainly a fantastic way to make you feel more at home in your living room.
Personal treasures and lovely souvenirs can remind you of joy-filled times, and encourage you to plan more fun events and gatherings in the future.

Of course, you don’t want to clutter up your living room with random knick-knacks. But some well-placed items that mean a lot to you will make your space more inviting.
If you have a large inventory of framed photos and other sentimental items, you can rotate them throughout the year to ensure that you get to experience them all.
8. Add mirrors
Mirrors are a great way to reflect the soft lighting you’ve added to your living room. The mirrors help the light bounce around the room, adding warmth to dark areas.
The reflection can make your space look bigger, which also makes it more inviting. A faceted mirror adds sparkle and glamour.
Place lamps or candles near your mirror to instantly make your living room more cozy.
9. Color, pattern, texture, and shine
Does anyone else remember that show, What Not to Wear? Stacy and Clinton would always recommend that people add color, pattern, texture, or shine to make their outfit complete.
The same is true for home decor. How much shine you want to add depends on how glamorous your style is. But color, pattern, and texture are definitely universal ways to make your home look more cozy.
Just like rugs, throw pillows, and blankets can all add color, patterns, and texture, so can window treatments.
Window treatments offer privacy and protection from the outside heat or cold. They also instantly add warmth and softness to your living room.
Consider incorporating a variety of elements that offer color, pattern, and texture to your space.
10. Faux or fresh flowers
Nothing freshens up a space quite like a vase of flowers. They can also serve to make your space feel more like home.
You could pick up fresh flowers each week at the grocery store. Or incorporate some quality faux floral arrangements like these.
Beautiful vases like this modern angled stoneware one also help add texture to your space.
